Recycling of Road Sweepings to Significantly Reduce the Pressure on Landfill

The recycling of road sweepings can significantly reduce the pressure on landfill and makes available resources that would otherwise go direct to waste.

A variety of materials can be recovered from sweepings via a washing process and typically consists of:

  • Sand
  • Grit
  • Organics
  • Glass
  • Ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Plastics

When washed out of the bulk sweepings, the recovered materials such as the grits and sands can be graded and re-used in such applications as road construction, pipe bedding, landscaping and non-critical construction materials and the organic fractions can be used in anaerobic digestion processes.

Working closely with private companies and the public sector, SNF polymers can be employed to optimise the dewatering process post washing and wash water clarification, thereby reducing transport costs for any waste material that cannot be reused and has to be disposed of and allowing dirty water which would previously been discharged to sewage to be recirculated and reused around a site thereby reducing site potable water consumption and again giving a reduction in operating costs.
